Monarch Research
Staff biologist, Randy Laurence, works with groups on fundamental research into the mystery of monarch butterfly migration. The Nature Center is actively involved with the Monarch Migration studies of the University of Kansas' "Monarch Watch Program," as well as the "Monarchs in the Classroom" programs of the University of Minnesota directed by Dr. Karen Oberhauser and the Texas Monarch Watch, directed by Dr. William Calvert. The Nature Center also provides information and statistics for the Journey North program (http://www.learner.org/jnorth/).

In the spring groups of students, supervised by an adult researcher, will monitor the presence of Asclepias species in Maverick County. This milkweed plant is the sole breeding and food plant of the monarch butterfly.
