February 10th from 8:30 to 12:30, the Rio Bravo Nature Center hosted a small group of birders in Quemado Valley along the Rio Grande some 15 miles north of our location. The group was led by Sylvestre Sorola of Texas Parks and Wildlife. Mr. Sorola and Randy Laurence, wildlife biologist for the Rio Bravo Nature Center, assisted beginning birders in spotting 54 species at three sites: the Valley Cemetery Road, which is along a narrow slough full of dead trees, a brushy ranch on the Rio Grande, and a small private bird sanctuary in the middle of the Valley. Weather was not the best of conditions: ground winds to 40 mph, temp at 45 maximum with high humidity/serious chill factor and overcast skies. The absolute highlight of the trip was the osprey with a huge carp in his claws perched on a dead tree in the slough. He stayed around the entire 45 minutes we birded the site.
